Yoga and Mindfulness: Nurturing Focus, Creativity, and Well-Being

October 7, 2025

At The Greene School in West Palm Beach, education extends far beyond academics. Through our Yoga and Mindfulness program, we nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit. As part of our regular curriculum for Pre-K through 8th grade, yoga at The Greene School helps students build focus, strength, creativity, and emotional balance.

A Thoughtful, Integrated Approach

Yoga at The Greene School is woven into our integrated curriculum, complementing subjects like foreign language and the arts. Each class provides students with a chance to slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with themselves and others. This mind-body practice aligns beautifully with our mission to develop critical thinking, creativity, and empathy in every student.

Our regular yoga classes are a cornerstone of the school’s enrichment program, designed to support overall student development. By combining yoga with mindfulness and dance, students learn valuable life skills such as patience, self-awareness, and resilience—all while having fun.

Building Strength, Focus, and Calm

Each yoga class begins with ten deep breaths and an invitation for students to choose a word of intention—like calm, kind, or energized—to guide their day. From there, students flow through engaging movements such as Sun Salutation A, a playful sequence that strengthens the body and focuses the mind.

- Younger students learn through songs and games that make yoga accessible and joyful. Their favorite part of class is “Secret Garden Time,” a peaceful visualization where they imagine a safe, happy place to rest and relax.

- Older students and middle schoolers focus on balance and strength through poses like Tree Pose, Crow Pose, and Plank, while also enjoying moments of quiet reflection in Savasana (resting pose).

Mindfulness in Motion

Mindfulness is at the heart of our yoga program. Students practice mindful listening—tuning in to sounds near and far—and mindful eating, where they use all five senses to appreciate each bite. These simple exercises help children develop focus, gratitude, and a sense of calm that carries into the classroom and beyond.

Our teachers also guide students through deep breathing techniques to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, known as the brain’s “chill out” mode. This helps reduce stress, improve concentration, and promote emotional regulation.

A Simple Way to Practice Mindfulness at Home

Families can join in on the mindfulness journey with a simple activity called “Take 5 Breathing.”
Have your child open their hand like a starfish. As you trace up each finger, breathe in; as you trace down, breathe out. It’s a calming, five-breath ritual that helps everyone feel centered and connected—perfect for busy mornings or bedtime routines.

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

The benefits of yoga and mindfulness extend well beyond the classroom. Students who learn to pause, breathe, and focus are better equipped to manage challenges, approach learning with curiosity, and show compassion toward others. These skills strengthen not only academic success but also emotional intelligence—an essential part of The Greene School’s mission to prepare confident, thoughtful global citizens.

Fostering Lifelong Well-Being

At The Greene School, we believe education should prepare children not only for academic success, but for a lifetime of well-being and self-awareness. Our Yoga and Mindfulness program empowers students to find balance, build confidence, and approach life’s challenges with clarity and compassion.
