Gratitude was the theme of the month in November at The Greene School, and our students put that spirit into action in a meaningful way through the Thanksgiving Box Brigade! Yesterday, our newly-formed National Honor Society (NHS) delivered 11 donation boxes to Boca Helping Hands, each brimming with Thanksgiving pantry essentials collected by our dedicated community. These boxes, combined with a turkey provided by a private donor, will be given to local families who are in need next week, helping them celebrate a happy Thanksgiving.
This project marked the first major event led by our National Honor Society since the group's induction in 2024. The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that recognizes and fosters not only academic excellence but also the core pillars of Service, Leadership, and Character—all of which were exemplified by the success of this drive.
To be considered for induction into The Greene School's NHS chapter, eligible students must be sophomores or older and maintain a 3.6 or higher GPA. Once the academic requirement is met, students must submit a personal statement to be accepted, demonstrating how they embody the NHS pillars. By leading the Thanksgiving Box Brigade, our students took real ownership of the effort, showing how Social Empowerment, one of our school's core values, comes to life when young people are encouraged to lead. This extensive service project directly ties into the NHS commitment to giving back to the community.
The generous donations from The Greene School community were used to fill each box with the Thanksgiving dinner essentials requested for the Box Brigade. Each box contained all the ingredients for a full holiday meal, with the turkeys being provided separately by a private donor. Our students led the effort, filling each box with essential items including stuffing mix, canned gravy, powdered drink mix, canned vegetables, canned fruit, instant mashed potatoes mix, canned yams, cranberry sauce, and canned pie filling —everything needed for a full holiday meal!To make the collection even more exciting, NHS hosted a friendly contest to see which grade could fill the most boxes. Participation was enthusiastic across the school, but the senior class pulled ahead and earned the top spot!
When the students delivered the food at Boca Helping Hands, they had the opportunity to meet the Executive Director, Andrew Hagen. Mr. Hagen graciously gave the NHS members a tour of the facility, offering a deep understanding of how a critical non-profit organization like theirs operates within the community.
Boca Helping Hands has served families across our region for many years, operating a food pantry and providing critical assistance year-round, not just during Thanksgiving. Our students were proud to support their mission, and we look forward to doing more projects together in the future that help them provide meals, medical, and financial assistance to those in need.
As we look ahead to the holiday season, this effort reflects what we hope to inspire every day at The Greene School: thoughtful action rooted in gratitude and a belief in the power of community.
