When families search for private schools with competitive sailing programs, The Greene School now proudly stands out. Located in Palm Beach County, one of the best places in the country for year-round sailing, we saw the perfect opportunity to combine our innovative academics with the excitement and challenge of life on the water. Before we launched our program, only one other school in the county even offered sailing. Now, our students can chase big winds and big ideas at the same time.
We also know that competitive sailing often requires a huge commitment from parents, who typically take on everything from logistics to travel to equipment management. At The Greene School, we take pride in handling those details for our families, so students can focus on growing as sailors and families can focus on cheering them on.
Sailing is unlike any other sport. It is physical, strategic, and deeply connected to the environment. Our students learn:
Even more important, sailing brings students together. Out on the water, there are no phones or distractions, just sailors, their teammates, and the wind.
Our sailing program is open to students in grades 6–12, with opportunities for beginners and advanced racers alike. No prior experience is required. Our coaching staff meets each sailor where they are, whether it is their first time rigging a boat or preparing for varsity-level competition. Our long-term vision is to expand even further, offering junior sailing opportunities for our youngest Dolphins.
A typical practice starts with rigging boats as a team, followed by a quick “chalk talk” to set the focus for the day. Then it is time to launch. On the water, students practice:
Coaches follow in small inflatables, guiding sailors while encouraging independence and decision-making.
The Greene School’s high school sailors will compete in every South Florida high school regatta and major C420 events this season. One of the biggest highlights will be the Orange Bowl Regatta, the largest youth sailing competition in the western hemisphere. For our team, it is not just about winning, it is about learning, improving, and pushing forward each time they sail.
In boats like the C420 and FJ, skipper and crew must work together seamlessly. The constant communication, spotting shifts, calling tactics, and adjusting sails teaches both leadership and teamwork in real time. On shore, the same spirit carries over: the boats do not get on the water until the whole team pitches in. These lessons in responsibility and collaboration last long after the sails are folded.
Our sailing program is led by a lifelong sailor who started competing at age seven, raced through college at The Citadel, and now coaches while teaching history at The Greene School. With years of experience coaching at Ransom Everglades and National Cathedral School, he brings both sailing expertise and a teacher’s perspective to help students grow on and off the water.
The best way to support the program is simple: get your student on the water. Parents and community members are also encouraged to come cheer at regattas, with our first one taking place September 27 in Hollywood, Florida. Your presence on shore shows our sailors that their crew extends well beyond the boats.
We also recognize that sailing can often feel like a full-time job for parents. At The Greene School, we take that weight off families by managing the details that typically fall on sailing moms and dads. Our goal is to let families enjoy the experience while we handle the logistics.
At The Greene School, sailing is not just another sport. It is a way to teach resilience, leadership, and the joy of discovery. For families looking for a private school with a competitive sailing program in Palm Beach County, we are proud to say the adventure starts here.
