At The Greene School High School, creativity doesn’t just happen in the classroom—it takes shape on walls, in studios, and across the campus. Our Mural Painting and Street Art class, led by professional sculptor Sarah Knouse, gives students a hands-on, immersive experience in drawing, painting, and printmaking while exploring the dynamic world of public art. From concept sketches to final brushstrokes, students are encouraged to bring their personal visions and social themes to life in bold, large-scale murals.
Recently, our students took an inspiring field trip to West Palm Walls Mural Park & Outdoor Museum right here in our community of Flamingo Park. There, they met celebrated muralist Tristan Eaton and witnessed a mural being created. Students marveled at the scale, energy, and technical skill involved, gaining insights into how public art can transform a space and spark conversation. IndieHouse Films captured the day beautifully, preserving moments of curiosity, creativity, and collaboration as students engaged directly with the professional art world.
Back at Greene, the experience fueled students’ own projects. In class, they experimented with color, proportion, composition, and value, tackling challenges unique to large-scale mural work. Students work independently toward their goal of designing and painting a series of unique murals that will soon be proudly displayed on campus. The process teaches more than technique—it cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving, and the confidence to make bold creative choices.
Sarah Knouse brings her expertise as a professional sculptor to guide students through both technical skills and artistic exploration, helping them connect their classroom lessons to real-world applications. Her mentorship emphasizes experimentation, risk-taking, and the joy of creating something that resonates with a community.
The Mural Painting and Street Art class is just one part of a robust high school Visual Arts program at The Greene School. Students can explore other disciplines, including:
Together, these courses create a rich, interdisciplinary environment where students can discover their artistic voices, experiment with materials, and take risks in a supportive setting.
The Mural Painting and Street Art class demonstrates the transformative power of creativity—how walls, often seen as blank or ordinary, can become vibrant canvases for expression. Greene students leave not only with technical skills but with the confidence and vision to make a statement, engage their community, and leave their mark on the world.
Mural and Street Art Students will also have the opportunity to meet world-renowned street artist Shephard Fairey as he installs a Mural on-site at West Palm Walls in early November.
