CARLO RATTI ASSOCIATI THE GREENE SCHOOL – GARDEN SCHOOL IN FLORIDA
“The Greene School” is a new school campus in West Palm Beach, Florida designed byCarlo Ratti Associati and inspired by the scientific theory of “biophilia” proposed in 1984 by scientist Edward O. Wilson.
The theory suggests that human beings have an instinctive bond with other living systems and with the world of nature. In accordance with this hypothesis, the complex designed by Carlo Ratti Associati blends nature with technology, creating not classrooms shut off from the world outside but “porous” environments in which students experience both technology and nature, taking into consideration that one of the most important requirements of teaching spaces is the ability to promote a sense of community, not just the capacity to convey information to individuals. Along with the considerations of Carlo Ratti, founder of Carlo Ratti Associati and MIT professor, about shared spaces, teamwork and exchange of ideas as key elements for the development of creativity, these ideas inspire the layout of the school, in which “the plaza” and “the garden ” are key central elements shared by all.
The plaza is inspired by the “Italian piazza” and is an expression of the student community, while the big garden adjacent to the building will contain a variety of structures promoting socialisation, such as organic gardens, playing fields and a digital fabrication laboratory.
