We are accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year.
We fuse educational best practices with the latest in scientific research, technology and design.
Our interdisciplinary curriculum is personalized for each student and explored through a mix of individual, group, and experiential learning.
Design + Collaboration
Design, creativity, and collaboration are woven into everything we do, including curriculum, activities, and the environment where students spend much of their day.
Our teaching team is comprised of experts who have taught at the best public, private, and charter schools domestically and internationally. They work one-on-one with students and parents to ensure academic, social, and emotional growth.
To excel in today’s world, students need both depth in their educational experience and breadth. The Greene School fosters interdisciplinary learning across all core and enrichment subject areas. We also provide students with ample opportunities to explore their interests and cultivate uniquely differentiated strengths.
Our core academic program consists of Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science and Foreign Language, and is combined with our broad enrichment program of Visual Arts, Music, Computer Science, Engineering, Coding, Robotics, Physical Education, Yoga, Dance, Meditation and Mindfulness. The Greene School’s cross-curricular approach encourages critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and compassion, and provides our students with the education and tools necessary to prepare them for a dynamic world.
Students whose academic needs go beyond the existing advanced curriculum are able to accelerate further, by subject or by grade. Our teachers personalize students’ learning to ignite and sustain their passion for knowledge. Through an inquiry-based classroom environment, Greene School students become engaged, motivated, lifelong learners, and transformational leaders.
The Greene School Science curriculum was created specifically with a focus on the academically advanced child. Our learners rarely think in one modality which is why a tailored science curriculum is a necessity.
The goals of our Science curriculum is for our students to analyze real-world problems, understand the concept of systems, and design as well as conduct scientific experiments. By utilizing Full Options Science System (FOSS), our students experience the work of real Science in the application of data handling skills, analyzing information, evaluating results, and communicating their understanding.
At Greene, we encourage and inspire our students to be confident and competent mathematicians. Using the Singapore math program, our educators provide a variety of concrete hands-on experiences to bolster numbers sense that students can apply to more abstract mathematics.
We emphasize students to communicate their mathematical work which prepares our learners to share their thinking with others. Additionally, we understand that engaging student intelligence in every modality (auditory, tactile, visual and kinesthetic) is fundamental to successful teaching and learning.
Social Studies comes to life at Greene! Through an emphasis on critical thinking, primary resource analysis, historical thinking, research and project based learning, our students become historians. As our students progress through each grade level, they will take a journey to our local communities, the California Gold Rush, Japan and Mexico to name a few of our stops through our curriculum.
Each learning adventure will commence with an immersion experience that introduces the theme. Students will then conduct in-depth investigations that will demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained followed by a culminating activity will demonstrate a meaningful product created by the student.
Our Language Arts curriculum is geared toward fostering a lifelong love of literature. Students read literature that is at a minimum one grade level above their chronological grade placement. Our readers communicate ideas and judgements about literacy works that run the gamut of genres. The Language Arts program incorporates the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. These areas are viewed as one unified subject in which each of the five areas supports the others and enhances thinking and learning. In addition, we believe the knowledge, skills, and strategies of language arts are integrated throughout the curriculum, enabling students to solve problems and think critically and creatively in all subject areas. We encourage our students to apply spoken and written vocabulary to real world situations.
Public Speaking is another essential component in our Language Arts curriculum. Students have the opportunity to present in front of their peers as well as adults. This component improves communication skills, increases self-esteem as well as organizational skills and give students the power of persuasion. Public Speaking is a lifelong skills that transcends across all career paths.
Having the confidence to take risks in the art room translates to confidence in ideas and risk-taking in other subject areas. The Greene School Art Program equips students with the ability to reach outside their comfort zone and become successful beyond the realm of art. Students carry that persistence and feeling of accomplishment to other subject areas. In art class, we focus on engaging in creative habits using new media and art techniques.
All students deserve an enriching arts curriculum so that they may grow up to appreciate beauty in the world and feel connected to humanity.
The music program at The Greene School invites students to explore their own creative expression while making connections to the rest of the world. Students learn to listen with a critical ear to the many components of a piece, including its form, instrumentation, timbre, mood, meaning, intention and more. Students develop music literacy skills and put those skills to use in compositional and performance projects. Students are encouraged to be expressive in their performances and to use music as a means of communication.
Through the study of history, acoustics, world music, music technologies, and careers in music, students get a strong understanding of the ways in which music weaves itself throughout all of our lives. Music is part of what it means to be human and helps us understand the world. Study in the arts completes the education of the whole child. The arts provide opportunity for higher order thinking, and engaging in music activates the whole brain.
Computer Science at The Greene School teaches students design, logical reasoning, coding, and problem-solving. Students gain exposure to various technologies in our Maker Space, including: 3D Printers, Robotic Systems, Mobile Application Development, Website Design, and Digital Fluency. Our Computer Science program empowers our students to compete in a global economy, having acquired digital fluency.
Students begin by building and programming simple robotic systems. As they become familiar with the basic concepts, they tinker with components like sensors, and increase the complexity of the programming concepts. Some students initiate their own projects, as their imaginations are primed by their increasing understanding of how their robots work and how they can control them.
At The Greene School, our goal is to graduate students who are prepared to excel in a global community and are truly at ease beyond their borders. We understand that language acquisition is integral to achieving that goal. Beginning in Pre-K, students have Spanish class 5 days a week - much more time dedicated to learning a second language than in most elementary school programs. By the time students reach the 3rd and 4th grade, they are able to incorporate reading and writing skills into their language acquisition and build upon what they have already learned.
Yoga & Mindfulness
Life is about breath and balance. The Greene School Yoga & Mindfulness Programs play an important role in the overall development and learning potential of students while providing skills that support the learning taking place in other subjects.
Through participation in the yoga curriculum, students learn techniques that promote strength, coordination, flexibility, and balance. An emphasis is placed on gratefulness and incorporating that quality into everyday life. Breathing, relaxation, and meditation skills also build focus while promoting self-control, self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall body awareness.
The mindfulness course teaches students to be present in the moment while focusing on the task at hand. Reflection also nurtures creativity. The course is also designed to help students develop a deeper sense of self-awareness and empathy, while learning to balance emotions, control impulses, and integrate heart with mind.
Hands-on, project-based learning is the essence of our engineering program, with and emphasis on making S.T.E.A.M. connections across disciplines. Engineering at The Greene School promotes students’ application of existing knowledge in mathematics and science - where their learning is enhanced as a result. Engineering projects are derived from real-world technologies and problems, allowing students to discover the relevance of math and science in their daily lives. Our program builds on a student’s natural problem-solving skills to promote critical thinking via tinkering in our Maker Space. Students gain exposure to robotic systems and various engineering methodologies, and the metrics contributing to the success/failure of projects. Real-world problems are discussed. Students have the ability to design and rapid prototype via use of our 3D printers.
Fitness and Physical Education
The fundamental goal of Physical Education is for students to find a lifelong passion for physical activity. Our students practice sportsmanship by displaying appropriate, polite and fair behavior while participating in games or athletic events. Performance or skill-related fitness focuses on improving agility, balance, flexibility, speed, coordination, power and reaction time. Proper nutrition encourages children’s optimal growth and development. Involving students in a curriculum that incorporates competition, sportsmanship, sports rules, regulations and nutrition empowers them to be fit for life.
